All About Garage Door Openers

We spend a lot of time talking about commercial and residential garage doors, and have written about everything from which is the most durable and how to measure insulation to how to keep it secure from a break-in and how to make sure your garage door compliments the rest of your home design. However, today, we want to take some time to examine a topic that is arguably just as important as garage doors but gets a lot less love—garage door openers.

Some people think garage door openers are not important or even unnecessary but that’s not true at all. They are just as important as the garage door itself when it comes to convenience, safety, security and adding resale value to a home. There are three main types of openers: chain driven openers, screw driven openers and belt driven openers. We’ll take you through a brief description of each one and how they compare to each other, as well as an explanation of the garage door opener brands that we carry and install:

Chain Driven Openers: these are the most commonly used type of opener due to their extreme durability and reliability. A chain driven opener runs the door using a metal chain—as the name would imply—which does make the opener a little noisy. However, these openers do tend to be more affordable than other models and are a great value for the price if you don’t mind the noise.

Screw Driven Openers: screw driven openers are much different from the other two main types of openers. They use a different lifting mechanism which runs on a threaded steel rod, rather than a chain or a belt like the other two models. These openers are not as reliable as the other two types, especially in places with strange weather patterns. These function best in areas that have relatively stable weather and temperatures year-round. They are also nosier and slower than chain driven or belt driven openers. However, they are the least expensive of all three types of openers.

Belt Driven Openers: we highly recommend belt driven garage door openers. These are regarded by garage door and garage door opener professionals as the best in the industry. Belt driven openers are every bit as reliable as chain driven openers, but because of their design, these openers run on a steel reinforced belt, are practically silent. They are a little more expensive than chain driven openers or screw driven openers, but because of their durability and quiet design, we think it’s worth the extra dough. This is one investment you’ll have been glad to make for years to come.

We carry two great brands—LiftMaster and Genie. We love these two manufacturers for their openers’ high quality, durability, reliability and performance to value ratio. We’ve seen just about every type of garage door opener out there and we consistently find that these two brands perform the best. We sell and install these two brands of openers, but we can repair and service any kind of opener you currently have installed, regardless of the brand or model! We have been in the garage door and garage door opener installation and repair business for a long time now, and we haven’t yet come across a problem or a brand that we can’t fix.
