Preventing Garage Break-Ins

Everybody loves a good vacation, especially around the holiday season. Whether you’re visiting family for the holidays or getting away to somewhere warm and sunny, chances are you’ll be packing up and shipping out for at least a few days this fall or winter. The last thing you want to worry about while you’re away is whether or not your home is secure. Making sure your garage is secure is a big part of making sure your entire home is secure while you’re gone. So we put together a list of tips to help you keep your garage intruder free!

Open garage door in suburban house

  • Close your garage: We know; this one seems obvious. But you’d be amazed how many people forget to close their garage doors, or make sure they close completely, every day.  When you’re leaving for vacation you have a million other things on your mind—grabbing the suitcases, getting the kids in the car, trying to get the dog to stop barking—and the garage door can become an afterthought.
  • Don’t leave your garage door opener out: If you aren’t taking your car or cars on vacation, and you don’t have room to put them in the garage, make sure you take your garage door openers out. If a thief sees it, all they have to do is break your car window and they have access to your home.
  • Secure your emergency release: Would-be burglars can use something as simple as a coat hanger to engage your emergency release from outside your garage and open the door. You can use a zip tie to secure the mechanism from thieves, but you will still be able to use it in an emergency (we’ll post a more detailed blog explaining how to do this next week!).
  • Lock it up: Make sure to keep the door between your garage and home locked, especially when you’re not home. Also, consider installing a deadbolt. It might be a little inconvenient now, but it will save you a lot of heartache and hassle later!
