Securing Your Emergency Release

Last week, we gave you a list of tips to help you keep your garage safe and sound while you’re away for the holidays. Garages serve as storage for some of the most valuable items you own, from bikes and lawnmowers to power tools and expensive appliances like refrigerators and washing machines. And since so many garages let directly into the home, it provides an easy way to gain access to your house as well.

Tip number three from last week’s post was to secure your garage door’s emergency release. Emergency releases are essential for ensuring you can open the garage door in an emergency, like a power outage. Unfortunately, clever burglars have figured out a way to trip this mechanism from the outside making it possible for them to open you garage door with nothing more than a wire coat hanger. Lucky for you, this can be prevented in a few minutes with a pack of five-dollar zip ties from the hardware store.

Once you have a zip tie, thread it through one of the holes in the emergency release lever and fasten it around the garage door track. It’s that simple! That will keep any would-be burglars from being able to engage the emergency release lever and open your garage door from outside the garage. This will not prevent your garage door from functioning normally and should you need to use the emergency release to open the door during a power outage, you can cut the zip tie or use your body weight to break it.

Hopefully, this cheap and easy trick will keep your garage secure during the holiday season and all year round.
