Garage Door Spring Size Guide
Four numbers off a tape measure tell us exactly which torsion spring your door needs - so the truck shows up with the right one and the job is done in one trip.
Spring Identifier
What size is your torsion spring?
Tape measure. Two minutes. No tools on the spring.
Measure, don’t adjust. Never loosen a set screw or touch the winding cones. A wound spring stores enough force to break bones. If the door is open, close it first.
Step 1 of 3Wire size
Measure 20 coils
Hook your tape on the edge of one coil, count 20 coils along the spring and read the tape to the nearest 1/16″. Coils only - stay off the cones.
inches - tap to type a fraction
Count the tops of the coils and start at zero, not one.
Inside diameter
Read the number stamped on the cone at the end of the spring, or measure across the inside of the coil.
Length
First coil to last coil - do not include the cones. Nearest 1/4″.
inches - coils only
Broken? Measure each piece where the coils actually are and add them - skip the gap. Leave the pieces where they are.
How many springs on the bar?
Standing inside, facing the door.
Two-spring doors take a matched pair: one right-wound (left of center) and one left-wound (right of center). We just need to know which side each one mounts.
Extension springs, or rather not measure?Text us a photo
Measure only - never touch the cones
