Modern openers offer smartphone control, real-time alerts, battery backup for power outages, and safety sensors that prevent the door from closing on people or objects. Our technicians will help you choose the right unit for your home, your budget, and how you actually use your garage.

Garage Door Opener Types

There are three main drive types for residential garage door openers. Each has trade-offs around noise, durability, and cost. Here’s how to think about which one fits your home.

screw drive garage door opener

Screw Drive Garage Door Openers

Screw drive openers use a threaded steel rod to lift the door and have fewer moving parts than chain or belt drive units. They’re the most affordable option, but they’re sensitive to temperature extremes – the plastic carriages can wear faster in regions with big seasonal swings. Given Oklahoma’s hot summers and cold winters, we generally recommend chain or belt drive for most homeowners here.

chain drive garage door opener

Chain Drive Garage Door Openers

Chain drive openers are the most common type found in American homes – reliable, affordable, and built to last. A metal chain pulls the trolley along the rail to open and close the door. They’re louder than belt drive units, but if your garage isn’t attached to a living space or bedrooms, the noise usually isn’t an issue.

belt drive garage door opener

Belt Drive Garage Door Openers

Belt drive openers work the same way as chain drive but use a steel-reinforced rubber belt instead of a metal chain. The result is significantly quieter operation – noticeable if your garage is attached to your home or beneath a bedroom. They cost a bit more than chain drive, but for most homeowners with an attached garage, the quiet operation is worth it.

Garage Door Opener Repair

Garage door openers have a lot of moving parts, and with enough use, something will eventually wear out. It doesn’t matter what brand you have – our technicians can diagnose and repair any make or model. Most repairs are completed in a single visit with parts stocked on the truck.

genie garage door opener repair battery failure

Battery Failure

Dead batteries in your remotes are the most common – and most overlooked – cause of opener problems. If your wall button still works but the remote doesn’t, start there. If neither works, the issue may be with the opener’s logic board or power source.

LiftMaster garage door opener repair safety eyes sensor alignment

Sensor Misalignment

The safety sensors at the base of your garage door require a direct line of sight to function. When they’re knocked out of alignment – or when something is blocking the beam – the door will go up but refuse to close. Check that both sensors are aimed at each other and that the indicator lights are solid (not blinking).

garage door opener remote

Autonomous Operation

If your garage door opens or closes on its own, the transmitter is usually the cause. A stuck button, a frequency conflict with a neighbor’s remote, or interference from nearby electronics can all trigger the opener without you touching it. Reprogramming or replacing the remote typically resolves it.

residential garage doors

Runs Without Opening the Door

If the motor runs but the door doesn’t move, the manual disconnect cord has likely been pulled – either intentionally or accidentally. This cord allows you to operate the door by hand during a power outage, but if it gets tripped, the trolley disengages from the drive. Re-engaging it is usually a quick fix.

broken garage door spring

Broken Springs

Torsion springs do the heavy lifting – literally. They counterbalance the weight of the door so the opener only has to guide it, not carry it. When a spring breaks, the door becomes too heavy for the opener to move and the door goes nowhere. Spring replacement requires the right tools and training – this is one repair to leave to a professional.

Off Track Garage Door

Track Alignment

If the door is off-track or binding as it moves, don’t force it – you risk damaging the door, the opener, or both. Track issues are usually caused by an impact or hardware that has worked loose over time. A technician can realign the tracks, tighten the hardware, and inspect for any underlying damage.

Garage Door Opener FAQ

Is chain drive or belt drive better for my home?

It depends on where your garage is relative to your living space. Belt drive is significantly quieter and worth the extra cost if your garage is attached to your home or if there’s a bedroom above or adjacent to it. Chain drive is perfectly reliable and costs less – a good choice for detached garages where noise isn’t a concern.

Does battery backup matter in Oklahoma?

Yes – more than most places. Oklahoma storms regularly knock out power, sometimes for hours. Without battery backup, your electric opener becomes a manual door until power returns. If you have an attached garage, losing opener access during a storm or emergency is a real inconvenience. We recommend the Genie 2128 or 6170 for this reason.

Can you repair my opener if it’s not a brand you sell?

Yes. We service all major brands including LiftMaster, Genie, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Linear, and more. If we can’t source the part or the unit is beyond economical repair, we’ll tell you upfront and give you honest options.

How long does a garage door opener installation take?

Most residential opener installations take one to two hours. That includes removing the old unit if there is one, installing and programming the new opener, setting up the remotes and wall button, and testing the safety sensors before we leave.

What’s the difference between the Genie 2028 and 2128?

One feature: battery backup and smartphone control. The 2028 is a straightforward, reliable opener with remotes and a wall button – nothing more. The 2128 adds a built-in battery that keeps the door working during power outages, plus WiFi and the Aladdin Connect app for remote access. If you’re not sure which to get, most of our customers go with the 2128.
